How to Add Memory to a Macbook

A Macbook portable computer is a very handy device and very important as far as application of portable technology and emergency uses of technology is concerned. Even though it is a fairly easy device to manage and use, installation of memory into the Macbook is a complex process. Proper care should be taken and accurate knowledge should be acquired before gearing up to install memory in to the Macbook. For this, we will provide you with a basic idea of how you can install memory into your Macbook with minimum fuss and maximum optimized memory resource.

The Macbook usually has two memory slots, accessible by the removal of the memory door in the battery closet. Usually Macbook has 512 megabytes (MB) of DDR2 RAM installed. You can therefore install a Synchronous Dynamic Random-Access Memory (SDRAM) module installed or added into both the memory slots. The specifications that should be met by the module are the following:

  1. DDR SO-DIMM format
  2. 1 ¼ inch or smaller.
  3. 512 MB or 1 GB in size.
  4. 200-pin
  5. PC2-5300 DDR2 (667 MHz) RAM

Both the memory slots are usually full in the newly purchased Macbook. But you should also keep in mind that the highest memory space that can be installed into the slot is 2 GB. This is 1 GB on each of the 2 slots. Best performance is given by filling up both the slots with equal memory drives.

Now here are the steps to installing the memory into your Macbook.

1.

Remove the Battery

Shut down your Macbook and disconnect any other cable or cord connected to the computer. Turn the Macbook over and insert a coin into the battery release latch and turn. Lift the battery as soon as it pops out. It is advisable to wait for some time before the interior components cool down in your recently switched off Macbbook.

2.

Install the memory

Unscrew the captive screws to release the bracket. The levers on memory slots will spring out once you remove the bracket. If you have existent memory cards, remove them by ejecting them. You can do this by swiftly moving the lever to the left that automatically ejects the memory card. Now insert the new memory modules in the slot. Firmly push the memory modules to make them seated deeply into the slots. [Failure to do this may result in non-recognition of the memory cards or a no-power situation] Move the levers right to close them if they already haven’t done so. Replace the bracket and tighten the screws.

3.

Re-insert the battery

Place the right side of the battery in the compartment at an angle. Press on the left side gently to slide the battery into place and the latch shall automatically come into position. Use a coin to turn it the other way to lock the battery compartment.

Now, that you have a full, new memory installed into your new Macbook, carefully use it to optimize your Macbook’s performance.
